Funny movie quotes from The Private Navy of Sgt. O’Farrell (1968) starring Bob Hope, Phyllis Diller

Lt. Lyman P. Jones: Sorry, I bit your hand but I was dreaming about Nurse Krause, again.
Sgt. Dan O’Farrell (Bob Hope): Yeah, those reruns are murder.

Maria (Gina Lollobrigida): I don’t care if the Army does come first. As long as I’m the first woman.
Sgt. Dan O’Farrell (Bob Hope): And the last.

Nurse Nellie Krause (Phyllis Diller): Hey! Be careful! You want to muss my hair?

Pvt. Johnny Bannon: Sarge, movie starts in about five minutes. It’s a double feature, Sarge. Two Bing Crosby pictures.
Sgt. Dan O’Farrell (Bob Hope): Bite your tongue.

Sgt. Dan O’Farrell (Bob Hope): Snavely’s at the Crosby double feature, so it’s a cinch he’s asleep.

Calvin Coolidge Ishimura: Don’t shoot. I’m an American like you. I’m Calvin Coolidge Ishimura.
Sgt. Dan O’Farrell (Bob Hope): Yeah and I’m Sessue Hayakawa O’Farrell.

[no mail for Sgt. O’Farrell]
Sgt. Dan O’Farrell (Bob Hope): No problem, when you’re irresistable you never give ’em your right name.

Sgt. Dan O’Farrell (Bob Hope): [after getting his engagement ring returned to him] I should throw it away, but I have to get broken glass all over the beach.

Maria (Gina Lollobrigida): [turning down Bob Hope] You will find a nice American woman who will have much more than I have.
Sgt. Dan O’Farrell (Bob Hope): I don’t know where she’d put it.

It only seems fitting that after spending so many years entertaining American troops that Bob Hope would have enlisted into the Navy (on film that is) as the title character in The Private Navy of Sgt. O Farrell. When a Japanese torpedo hits a cargo ship containing a shipment of beer Sgt. O Farrell decides to rescue the beverages and deliver some nurses to the outpost for his men. The troops however are more than surprised to receive several male nurses and Phyllis Diller!

Diller had worked with Hope before in Boy Did I Get A Wrong Number. Bob turned to collaborator Frank Tashlin to co-write and direct the picture. Tashlin a former cartoonist had penned The Paleface and Son of Paleface (which he also directed) and several Jerry Lewis / Dean Martin films. The film also features Jeffry Hunter who has played everything from Captain Pike on the first episode of Star Trek to Jesus Christ in King of Kings and Dick Sargent of Bewitched. Starring: Bob Hope Phyllis Diller and Dick Sargent. Approx. running time: 92 minutes / color (not rated) Copyright 1968 Columbia Pictures
