Harry Houdini is celebrated as the greatest escape artist and magician of his day, who could escape anything … except death itself. Houdini died on October 31 – Halloween. His funeral, befitting his stature, included many of the most famous people of his day.
As they lifted the elaborate casket to their shoulders, Dillingham whispered to Ziegfeld in a whisper, “Suppose he isn’t here!”
